KETAMINE INFUSION THERAPY
What is Ketamine Infusion Therapy?
Ketamine Infusion Therapy involves administering a low, controlled dose of ketamine through an intravenous (IV) infusion in a safe medical environment. This treatment is used for depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, chronic pain, bipolar depression, and suicidality. Ketamine works differently from traditional medications and can provide rapid relief for individuals who haven’t responded well to other treatments.
What conditions does Ketamine Infusion Therapy treat?
Ketamine can help with a wide range of mental health and pain conditions, including:
-
Major depressive disorder
-
Treatment-resistant depression
-
Suicidal thoughts
-
Anxiety disorders
-
PTSD
-
OCD
-
Bipolar depression
-
Chronic pain (CRPS, neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia)
If you’re unsure whether you’re a candidate, our clinicians can guide you during your consultation.
How does ketamine work?
Ketamine acts on the NMDA receptor and stimulates glutamate, helping the brain create new neural pathways. This “neuroplasticity boost” is why ketamine can work even when traditional antidepressants have failed. Many patients describe it as a “reset” for the brain.
How long does each infusion take?
Infusions typically last about 45 minutes for mental health and 2–4 hours for chronic pain, depending on your individualized treatment plan. You’ll remain with a clinician throughout the entire experience.
How many infusions will I need?
For mental health conditions, the standard induction series includes six infusions, typically completed within 2–3 weeks for optimal, lasting results.
For chronic pain, most patients complete 3–5 infusions over approximately 1.5 weeks.
After the initial series, patients in both groups may transition to booster infusions as needed based on symptoms and clinical response.
What does the ketamine experience feel like?
Most patients describe the experience as:
-
Relaxing, dreamlike, or mildly dissociative
-
Feeling “lighter,” “floaty,” or deeply introspective
-
A sense of calm or emotional release
You remain aware, and the experience is temporary. Many patients say it is peaceful and meaningful.
Is Ketamine Infusion Therapy safe?
Yes. When administered by trained medical professionals, ketamine is considered very safe. It has been used in hospitals and operating rooms for over 50 years. At Golden Hour Wellness, all infusions are performed by licensed clinicians under physician oversight.
Will I be awake or asleep during treatment?
You will be awake but deeply relaxed. Ketamine does not cause you to lose consciousness. Your clinician is by your side at all times.
Is ketamine addictive?
No. When used in a controlled medical setting at low therapeutic doses, ketamine is not addictive. The risk of dependence is extremely low.
How long do the benefits last?
Many patients experience lasting relief and continued improvement well beyond their initial treatment series. Periodic booster infusions are available every few months to help maintain and extend results over time.
What are booster infusions?
Boosters are single infusions used to maintain results after your initial series. They are flexible and based on how you’re feeling. Some patients need boosters every few months, while others only need them occasionally.
Do I need a driver after my infusion?
Yes. You must have someone drive you home. You cannot drive, operate heavy machinery, or work for the rest of the day.
Can I go back to work after my infusion?
Most patients prefer to rest for the remainder of the day. You’ll feel completely back to normal by the next morning.
What are the potential side effects of Ketamine Infusion Therapy?
Common side effects may include mild dizziness, nausea, or dissociation (a feeling of being detached from reality), but these effects are typically short-lived and subside after the infusion is complete. Our team will discuss potential side effects with you before your treatment begins. If necessary, we can administer medications beforehand to help alleviate some of these minor side effects.
SPRAVATO® (ESKETAMINE)
What is Spravato® (esketamine)?
Spravato is an FDA-approved nasal spray used with an oral antidepressant for adults with treatment-resistant depression or MDD with acute suicidal ideation/behavior. It is administered in-clinic under supervision and includes post-dose monitoring.
What happens at my first Spravato appointment?
You’ll meet with a clinician to review your history and confirm Spravato is appropriate. If proceeding, we’ll guide you through the nasal administration, then you’ll rest in a comfortable room while we monitor you for about 2 hours before discharge.
How long does a Spravato visit take?
Plan for about 2 hours per visit to allow for administration, observation, and recovery per REMS requirements.
Is Spravato covered by insurance?
Yes. We accept insurance for Spravato. Our team will verify benefits and discuss any expected out-of-pocket costs and available manufacturer support.
What does a Spravato® treatment feel like?
Most patients describe the experience as calming, dissociative, or dream-like. You remain awake and able to respond throughout the session. Our clinical team closely monitors you the entire time to ensure comfort and safety.
What are the side effects of Spravato®?
Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, dissociation, and increased blood pressure shortly after dosing. These typically resolve within 1–2 hours under supervision. Our clinical team monitors you throughout the appointment to ensure safety.
How do I prepare for my first visit?
Eat a light meal a few hours beforehand and avoid heavy or greasy foods (you should fast 2 hours before). Hydrate well the day before and day of your appointment. We’ll review your medical history, medications, and answer all questions before treatment begins.
How does Spravato® work?
Spravato® acts on the NMDA receptor system and increases neuroplasticity, helping the brain form new, healthier pathways. This mechanism is different from traditional antidepressants, which is why many patients experience relief even after other treatments haven’t worked.
KETAMINE-assisted PSYCHOTHERAPY
What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy combines the benefits of ketamine infusion therapy with psychotherapy. Before, during, or after the infusion, you’ll work with a licensed therapist who will guide you through your healing process, helping you explore emotions, memories, and new perspectives in a supportive environment.
How does KAP differ from regular therapy?
Traditional therapy relies on verbal communication and cognitive techniques, while KAP uses the therapeutic benefits of ketamine to enhance emotional processing and breakthrough healing. Ketamine can help patients access deeper layers of their consciousness, facilitating a more profound therapeutic experience.
How many KAP sessions will I need?
The number of Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) sessions depends on your individual needs, goals, and how you respond to treatment. Your therapist will work with you to determine the most appropriate frequency and duration to support your progress.
